Bride Humiliated an Old Woman at Her Wedding—Then the Black SUVs Arrived A55
Beside the names were notes about routines, travel, and what should happen “after the wedding.”
Vanessa gave a frightened laugh.
“Anyone could type that.”
“Yes,” one detective said. “That’s why we’re examining where it came from.”
Then Eleanor slid the photograph forward.
Adrian stood beside a young woman outside a lakeside house.
Vanessa knew the woman immediately.
“Mom?”
Her mother, Claire, had died in a car crash when Vanessa was six.
In the photograph, Adrian was younger but unmistakable.
Vanessa looked toward her father, William.
“You told me Adrian had never met her.”
William gripped the back of a chair.
“I hoped this wasn’t what it looked like.”
Adrian moved toward the door.
Eleanor’s head lifted.
“Don’t let him leave.”
The detectives took over, asking everyone to remain available while they checked new information coming through on their phones.
Adrian stopped.
“This is theater.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“How did you know my mother?”
“She hired me.”
“For what?”
“Ask your father.”
Eleanor opened another folder.
Adrian had worked for a financial adviser who helped administer Claire’s assets. He knew about the trust Vanessa would inherit at twenty-five.
He had found Vanessa deliberately three years earlier.
The supposedly accidental meeting at a charity auction had been arranged through information purchased from an event contractor.
Recently, he had persuaded Vanessa to sign proposed changes adding her future husband as a cotrustee after their marriage.
She remembered the papers.
He had called them routine.
“They haven’t taken effect,” Eleanor’s attorney said. “The current trustee raised concerns. That appears to be why his name is on this list.”
Vanessa’s hands began shaking.
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
“If we’re discussing deception, tell her who you are.”
He placed his phone on the desk.
On the screen was a copy of an amended birth record.
Vanessa looked at Eleanor.
“What is this?”
Eleanor’s voice faltered.
“Claire raised you. She was your mother in every way that mattered.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“I gave birth to you.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.”
“I was forty-four. Your father and I had an affair. I believed keeping you out of the scandal would protect you.”
