“Get her away from the entrance.”

Vanessa stood beneath the white roses framing her wedding pavilion, pointing at an elderly woman in a plain gray coat.

“Do you have any idea what this event costs?”

The woman held a worn leather handbag against her side.

“Vanessa, I need a moment.”

“You need to leave.”

Several guests turned. A security guard approached.

The woman didn’t move.

“Are you certain the man you’re marrying is who he says he is?”

Behind Vanessa, a familiar voice answered.

“Take her out.”

Adrian had arrived.

The woman looked directly at him.

“Eighteen years, Adrian. Are you still afraid of what I might say?”

Vanessa turned.

“You know her?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

At forty-five, Adrian was twenty-one years older than Vanessa, a difference he called irrelevant whenever anyone questioned their relationship.

He understood her, he said.

He remembered every detail she told him about her childhood.

Now she wondered how many he had known already.

The guard escorted the woman toward the driveway.

Adrian squeezed Vanessa’s hand.

“People target families like yours. Don’t let her ruin today.”

Vanessa nodded.

But when the music began, she couldn’t make herself step forward.

Four black SUVs stopped outside the estate.

A woman carrying a briefcase hurried toward the elderly visitor.

“Madam President. I’m sorry we’re late. The investigators needed the original documents.”

Vanessa recognized her from a meeting at her father’s bank.

Then she recognized the name the woman spoke.

Eleanor Whitmore.

President of the holding company that controlled the bank financing her family’s hotels.

Eleanor looked nothing like her formal photographs. No diamonds. No polished smile.

Only exhaustion.

Vanessa approached.

“Why didn’t you say who you were?”

“I was trying to tell you something more important.”

They moved into her father’s study.

Eleanor’s attorney accompanied them. So did two detectives who had arrived in an unmarked vehicle behind the SUVs.

“This began with a package delivered last night,” Eleanor said.

She placed three items on the desk.

A photograph.

A laboratory report.

A printed message thread containing a list of names.

Vanessa’s was first.

Below it were her father’s and the independent trustee overseeing her inheritance.
